In one sense it always is.
Example: better medicine, technology, better standards of living, more efficient machines and vehicles, longer life spans, etc.
When governments get too big they tend to destroy the country, as many have in the past and will do so in the future.
In general things are always getting better day by day.

example of the good it does: alerts other nations (through the media and other outlets like internet blogs, etc) of the wrongdoings of other nations like human rights issues and military action..makes that type of news available to everyone

Yes it is. It is because of the invention of the nuclear weapons. Earlier there were two World War in thirty years. After the nuclear weapon came into picture we have not faced a single war of that kind for the last sixty years.
